I have totally been that person changing a million times right before a family photo shoot, second-guessing everyone’s outfit, especially mine. Before you know it, every piece of clothing I own has made its way to my closet floor.
If you have ever found yourself in the same stressful situation, keep reading. I have some tips to help you pick the perfect outfit for your next photo shoot!
Tip #1: Keep it Simple
Keep it simple. I am true believer that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. Sometimes the simplest outfit can make the biggest statement. Let your emotions and backdrops speak louder than your outfit. You also want to be careful your outfit doesn’t clash with your backdrops or landscapes. I love to focus on neutrals, denims, whites, and light blues. Jewel tones are also great for adding a pop of color in your photos. My favorite jewel tones include variations of maroon, teal, mustard, deep purple and burgundy. I recommend staying away from busy prints, but if you’re looking for a pop of color, go for solid colored pants, add a cardigan or wear a printed headband or some fun statement jewelry.
Tip #2: Be Comfortable
When you feel amazing, you look amazing. It’s so important to choose clothes that you feel comfortable in. When you are uncomfortable, it can show in your photos. Others may not notice, but you will, and you want to love your photos. So choose clothes that you feel confident in, can easily move around in and that flatter your body shape.
Tip #3: Compliment Each Other
Don’t be afraid to get away from the focus on matching perfectly. I think it’s more important to focus on outfits that compliment each other, rather than being super “matchy”. Looking back to one of our very first family shoots, I was so focused on us all matching in plaid. This was before I really found a passion and understanding for styling. While, I love those photos, all I see is how we are all wearing “almost” matching plaid shirts. So focus on wearing outfits that compliment each other and still look like outfits you would normally be seen wearing. Its ok if you are not all wearing the same colors or print, in fact, I would encourage it, because it will add much more personality and dimension to your photos!
BONUS TIP: Lay out some outfit options at least a few days ahead so that you have time to make adjustments. This also gives you the chance to see your outfits together to make sure they won’t clash with each other. I also recommend trying everything on beforehand to ensure everything fits so you’re not left scouring your closet at the last minute looking for another outfit option. This is incredibly helpful if you have kids that recently went through a growth spurt. Taking some time to plan out outfits a few days before will help ensure that you aren’t left stressed or worried about an outfit mishap the day of your photo shoot and you will be able to enjoy documenting some beautiful memories!
